I upgraded my cell phone a couple of weeks ago. I am a bit high maintenance when it comes to gadgets, particularly my phones (not that I upgrade often, but when I do it comes with much research and detailed requirements).
My last phone was a Sony Ericsson S710a. It was the first Sony Ericsson I had, and I was really fond of the menu structures, overall feel of the phone, call quality etc. So I was definitely looking at another Sony Ericsson. No matter what brand I wound up with I wanted 3 things out of my new phone.
- A multi mega pixel camera. I tend to use my camera on my phone often, with the kiddos around you never know when you might want a snap.
- A quality mp3 player interface and serviceable storage capacity. I was going to be in the market soon for a new mp3 player so if I could kill two birds, all the better.
- This was the stretch goal - An FM tuner. I like to listen to the radio at work and having a FM tuner on my phone would again just make life simpler.
Turns out that Sony Ericsson does indeed make phones that fit the bill on all counts. I would up with the W580i. Part of their Walkman phone line it had all the features I wanted and came in a neat-o slider design. The phone is quite small too. I won’t do a detailed review of the phone, if you are interested you can find that out there on the net. But I will highlight this one little function that I think is neat….
With TrackID you can automatically record a snippet of what is playing, the phone then sends it to a recognition service and displays the results (Yes, I know what the song was and didn’t need to use the service, but it was just for demonstrative purposes).

Cool toy. Any battery concerns, though? Does frequent use of both the phone + mp3 player / radio require a recharge during the day (or, force you to avoid using the mp3 player so as to maintain phone service?)

I have been impressed so far. I usually plug my phone in overnight, but I have yet to see the battery past half used up.
