The Halloween candy will soon be gone. Some was eaten, some traded, some donated (to a local food pantry) and some remains.
And this year when asked “Dad, can I have some Halloween candy?” my answer almost every time has been “Yes”. With the exception of early morning or just before meals. Whats more, when asked how many pieces, I usually have replied “As many as you want”.
All this to the astonishment of the kids.
Turns out the kids don’t make themselves sick on it and they rarely eat more than 2 or 3 pieces at a whack.
They enjoy the freedom to make their own call on how much to eat and they still eat about how much I would have allowed them to. And, I enjoy saying yes and being the good guy.

Operation Phase-Out is a second generation tradition in our family. The gist:
Step 1: Kids bring home pillowcases weighted with countless pounds of candy; Due in large part to clueless and/or cheap neighbors, only a small portion of this loot is really of any interest to the kids, the rest is mere filler/bragging rights.
Step 2: Combine all candy from kids’ take into a single community container.
Step 3: Assess which candy is of least interest to the kids.
Step 4: On a daily basis siphon a small handful of the aforementioned undesirable candy from the community container into the trash. CAUTION: do not remove too much cruddy candy at once! This truly is a phase-out, and if done correctly the candy reduction can be credibly attributed to natural attrition.
Step 5: Repeat daily (and reassess if appropriate) in order to have all candy successfully eliminated prior to Easter Sunday - aka Operation Phase-Out Spring Edition.

Jay stop it! You continue to be funnier, more clever and more entertaining in your comments than I am in my posts. You are embarrassing me.

Mmm, some leftover Halloween candy would be good right about now. (Well, if I wasn’t sick.)
