Project 365 // Day 88

French Street, Hingham, MA 02043

88/365

Have driven by this spot plenty before. Never noticed the sign. Either it’s new, or it’s an illustration of why I like Project 365 so much. It makes me look at the world a bit different.

“A ‘Thickly Settled’ district is an area where houses or other buildings are located, on average, less than 200 feet apart.”

    It’s basically a 30 MPH speed limit sign. It’s a Massachusetts thing I think.

What a cool sign! That would be pretty messy to drive over a bunch of turtles crossing. Not to mention a little sad!

Strangely enough, I posted a sign today too. *wonders if the trend continues elsewhere…*

When I was going for my license I was convinced that the ‘thickly settled’ rule was a scam.

It’s not even marked half the time, yet I’m expected to do impromptu property surveying as I drive in order to figure the appropriate speed limit? C’mon!

I’d love to see a picture of the turtles making their way across the road and the line of cars honking and cursing while they wait.

Thickly settled? What the heck does that mean?

Oh, wait. I just read a comment up above that explains. Why wouldn’t they just post a sign that says “Speed Limit 30 MPH?” That’s weird.

Given that I’ve always lived in urban areas, buildings less than 200 feet apart are definitely not “thickly settled” to me. My house is roughly 10 feet from my neighbors on both sides. We should post signs in our neighborhood that say “Thickly Stacked.”

Wow, that must be some slow crossing… tieing up traffic for hours, I’m sure!

    Great photo.

Love the pic (background and all) and the fact that if I know see that sign Thickly Settled anywhere I can “WOW” friends and family that I know what it means.. :)
