The Camera Stole My Words

February 15th, 2008 · 5 Comments · Housekeeping

“The dog at my homework.”
“The dingo stole my baby.”
“The devil made me do it.”
“The camera stole my words.”

There are some cultures who believe that being photographed robs one of their spirit. Now, I don’t know about that, but does seem that taking pictures robs one of their writing ability.

I started my project 365 on February 2, since that time I have created 19 entries. Two, just two, were non-meme text entries. Everything else has been photographs or video.

It reached the point where a couple of people ‘complained’ about it! While I am flattered that my words would elicit disappointment by their absence, I am equally puzzled by said absence. My days are not dramatically different. Sure, I take somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30 pictures a day now. But that shouldn’t make me mute. Should it? I still have similar experiences day in and day out. Perhaps my focus is so clearly on capturing the experiences in picture that I haven’t been brewing paragraphs in my brain.

I never intended on my project 365 to dominate my blog the way it has. I figured that I would still post good old words just as frequently. Maybe it is just coincidence; a very normal lull in my writing that just so happens to be paired with an acceleration in shutters clicking. I do have two semi-serious, potentially monster posts rattling around upstairs. They may be contributing to the words slowing to a trickle too. I don’t know. What I do know is that I will now make a concerted effort to keep the words flowing.

Until then, enjoy the images, both still and moving. Soon, I hope the images will be inside your heads just as often as they are on the screen in front of you.

I actually really enjoy watching your photos over the last 19 days. You can actually see a progression of sorts. (I stalk you on flickr too.. but I think you know that).

Completely unrelated, but I just noticed for the first time that picture of you and that tool Dr. Charles on your sidebar. Too funny! There has to be a blog there…

“The dingo ate my baby” ahaha
aside from being a very serious line from the first aussie movie I ever saw, it is the 2nd BEST line EVER from Seinfeld, just behind..”Stella!”.

    Just thought I’d share.
