Should I Change My Banner?

The image on my home page is taken from a photo I took a couple weeks ago of the Goliath Crane at the Fore River Shipyard.  The crane is a fixture of my youth as there pretty much wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t catch some sight of it.  Now it’s being dismantled.  The shipyard has long been closed.

Today, however, there was a collapse of one of the legs of the crane.  Details are still being released. But what is known is that one person is dead.  Officials aren’t sure if anyone else is trapped in the wreckage.  Terrible stuff.

So, is it in bad taste to keep the image up there?  I don’t know.  What do you think?

  1. Man, the banner is yours. It’s meaningful to you and what it represents to you. I say keep it.

I don’t think Hoolywood rushed to edit the NYC skyline in every film in which it was depicted prior to the WTC collapse.

  2. No, don’t change it and I’ll tell you why.

I hated it when all the pictures of the Manhattan skyline had to be redone to reflect the new Trade Center-less image.

Pretending it never existed doesn’t make it any less a tragedy or any less a fixture and certainly no less a part of your lifetime. We as a nation love to whitewash our collective history and I find it repellent.

So leave the crane, and wish them well. They don’t want to be forgotten, ignored or photoshopped away.
