Almost 4 years ago, when I turned 35, I made a deal with myself that I would be fitter at 40 than I was at 35.
Thanks to one major life change (the kicking of a smokeless tobacco habit) I am all but guaranteed to make it a reality, but as I approach the final year of this challenge I wanted to get back on track overall.
Long time followers of this blog might recall that back in 2008 I produced a series of “W8Loss Wednesday” video segments and while doing so I dropped over 25 pounds. I have since put 15-20 of them back on. This being the case I have decided to get more active and see what happens.
I have installed and started using (starting tonight) RunKeeper, an iPhone app that tracks your running (or walking, or swimming, or biking….) sessions. For all those who want to keep tabs on me you can find my RunKeeper profile here.
The app is cool, it uses GPS to track my progress and provided audio prompts on my time, pace, and even prompts me when a particular interval of the program I am working on is starting (tonight I did a run for 60 seconds, walk for 90 seconds – for 20 minutes program). RunKeeper connects back to my RunKeeper profile and I even have it linked to my Facebook and Twitter accounts too.
Unlike my brother, I’m not going to be running a marathon any time soon (and by that I mean never). But getting out there and making an effort – that I can do. Tonight we had the whole family down at the local track. There’s a playground off the side, for the girls, and the boys and I ran/walked with my wife.
Hopefully I’ll stick with it. I think I will.
